Discussion Groups Study Sections

OVERVIEW

Bio5491 - Advanced Genetics provides an overview of basic concepts and techniques in genetics and their use in answering fundamental questions in biology. The lectures focus primarily on studies carried out in yeast, C. elegans, Drosophila, mouse, and humans to illustrate the power of genetics as an experimental tool.

Format of the Course

We have two lectures per week plus a discussion group or a Special Topics lecture on Monday. Class meets Tues/Thurs 2:00-3:30 in 823 McDonnell Sciences Building. First day of class is Tuesday January 15 and last day of class is April 15. On Mondays we either have a discussion group similar to those for MCB and Nucleic Acids or a Special Topics Lecture. Special Topics lectures are from 12-1 in 823 McDonnell; the time and place for the individual discussion groups vary and will be determined the first week of class.

The major project for the course is to write an NIH style post-doctoral fellowship proposal. Abstracts and Specific Aims of the proposal are due February 29. The proposal is due by NOON on Friday, April 25th. Study Sections will be held the week of May 5-9 from 1:00-5:00 pm. Each student is required to attend one study section. Each student will be given two proposal for a particular Study Section and that student is required to read and to provide a written and oral critique of both proposals at the Study Section.
